"I have just finished watching, “Todd P Goes To Austin”, and I am supercharged and excited to do my own DIY (do it yourself) shows. That is the power of this 70 minute documentary.

Those looking for a strong narrative structure should look elsewhere. This film isn’t about a beginning a middle or an end, it’s about the DIY music scene.

The premise that ties everything together is Todd P, who does DIY shows in Brooklyn, setting up some DIY shows during SXSW (South By Southwest). Little vignettes show various bands, as well as Todd P, traveling to Austin, Texas for the shows, but the real energy and focus of this documentary is on the music performances by Matt and Kim, Dan Deacon, The Death Set, Mika Miko, and several other bands. Why there is no soundtrack to this film I don’t know, but if they decide to release one I will be the first in line for it.

The live footage is shot during various DIY shows on the way to SXSW and in Austin. The footage is shot claustrophobically close in cramped in places, and gives a real feeling of being right there part of the experience.

This film is probably not for everyone, but DIY really isn’t about pleasing mainstream audiences. If you, like me, have a love for music, a DIY ethic, and really want to feel a part of the journey and the experience, then “Todd P Goes To Austin” is something magical you should check out."
