Bad Religion - "the dissent of man"

Bad Religion's The Dissent Of Man is an outstanding record, that treads a a territory that is well-defined by it's composers, but never comes off as treading water. This is a band that knows it's strengths, and like a samurai that has forged his own blade of folded steel, theirs is an instrument of precision, and they know how to wield it. Even though their are some of the school of thought that the Atlantic years were a misstep by Bad Religion, I disagree, and feel that they have been one of the most consistent bands out there making great, thought-provoking records today, and when they slow the tempo down on a few songs, it gives the entire output more impact. The Dissent Of Man is proof positive that Bad Religion is firing on all cylinders 30 years on. Impeccable production, great sequencing, strong performances, and quite simply, but most importantly, great songs. "The Devil In Stitches" itself is a great, dare I say, pop melody, but never once losing that Bad Religion view of the world. It just shows that while they could pummel you with speed (and often do), a song with a melody as catchy as "Devil" will stick in your head far beyond a minute and a half 200 beats per minute blitzkrieg.

There are more than a few influences on display here. I can hear a bit of old americana country progressions behind the classic Bad Religion motif, the pop elements, the impeccable harmonies (if you don't think these guys have listened to the Beach Boys you're crazy) all wrapped up in the faster than fast southern California punk rock book cover. Don't do your self a disservice, don't judge this book by it's cover. Jump right into it. You'll find yourself with a new favorite tome, one authored by veterans that 30 years on are still at the top of their game.

Rating 10/10. This album is a killer.
