Duncan Sheik - "covers 80s"

As advertised this is Duncan Sheik covering 12 songs made famous in the 80’s. Although “famous” is open to interpretation, as Duncan does not just go for the obvious “hits”.

For instance, the lead off cover is off Depeche Mode’s “stripped”, and later on the album he eschewed The Smiths bigger hits for a nice cover of, “William it was really nothing”. Probably most surprising is his choice of covering “gentlemen take polaroids”, by the little known British band, Japan.

That is not to say that all the choices are lesser known. One of my favorite covers on the album is Duncan’s take on “hold me know”, originally recorded by the Thompson Twins. Another is a cover of Love & Rockets’, “so alive”. There are also covers of well known songs from Tears From fears (“shout”), and the Psychedelic Furs (“the ghost in you”).

Some of these covers work better than others, but most are interesting. If there is any downfall to this album it is that Duncan Sheik keeps the entire album very simple and mellow, which does become tiresome after a while. A few tempo changes and musically bigger songs might have made the album as a whole less cumbersome. That said, there are many “singles” that stand well on their own.
