Shonen Knife - "Osaka Ramones"

Not too long ago I saw CJ Ramone doing a set of Ramones songs live. I really wanted to enjoy the show, but it felt like a wedding cover band doing slower, uninspired versions of classic songs.

When I heard Shonen Knife were doing an album of Ramones covers to celebrate their 30th anniversary as a band I was cautiously optimistic. On paper it made sense, one of their biggest influences was the Ramones, they even wrote a song called, “Ramones forever”, but what makes sense on paper does not always translate. I am happy to report that in this case it does!

“Osaka Ramones” is one hell of a fun album. Shonen Knife pay the proper respect to the Ramones classics, while adding their own touches to make it their own. What really blew me away was their take on “the kkk took my baby away”, which they gave the feel of a Ronettes song.

All the obvious hits are covered on this collection…except “I wanna be sedated”, which personally I am thankful for. Having heard so many covers of that over the years, I think it was a shrewd decision for them to bypass that song.

If somehow you have managed not to hear Shonen Knife over the last 30 years, let “Osaka Ramones” be your starting off point to one of Japan’s best bands.

"Ramones were my all-time idols since I first heard their music from a radio and rushed to a record shop. This year is the 30th anniversary of Shonen Knife. For celebration, we decided to record a cover album of our favorite band the Ramones. The title is "Osaka Ramones" with our respect. I'm very happy to release an Osaka Ramones project and to recognize their contribution to the evolution of Shonen Knife." Naoko, Shonen Knife
