CONCERT REVIEW

Foxy Shazam & Stars In Stereo live at the Stone Pony, Asbury Park 7-6-12

Foxy Shazam are what rock and roll used to be, and should forever still be. Anthemic, unpredictable, dangerous, loud, energetic, unapologetic, and just downright entertaining. Always turned up to 11, musically and personally, experiencing a Foxy show is just that: AN EXPERIENCE. The kind you don't tell momma about, but the kind you tell your friends about at that rooftop party where you are drunkenly walking the ledge trying to impress some hottie in a striped shirt. Seriously, from the opening clarion call of "Welcome To The Church Of Rock & Roll", through "Unstoppable", and right on to the point of the show where Schuyler was crowd surfing while still playing his keyboard, Foxy was the rock and roll party bus with the pedal held down by a brick. That is, until the brick fell off. During the last tune, Eric went on some sort of rant about the death of his girlfriend, impending death of his father and dog, and so (gimmick or not, it was blurring the lines) and the show abruptly stopped. I looked at the set times posted on the soundboard, and they stopped approximately 15 minutes before they were supposed to. It definitely made me wonder what the hell just stopped the "Unstoppable"...

Opening band Stars In Stereo put on a high energy set. It was obvious that they put a lot of time and effort into craftng their performance. Hitting all their marks as the show progressed, this female-fronted dark rock combo put the bounce in songs that would grace the ipod of the girl in the back of class, you know the one with the eyeliner running down her cheeks, with the patches of kittens wearing Nine Inch Nails t-shirts all over her backpack..yes, that one. Speaking of NIN, SIS (see what I did there) did what amounts to a rather amped up version of of Trent's opus "Closer" that definitely won the crowd over. Good choice.

All in all another hot night for rock and roll, as Paul Stanley would say....
