Whew! I'm still basking in the afterglow of a good deed and a great show that happened on Friday night at CBGB's. You Can't Keep Us Down! A Benefit for the Spirit of New York City, was the brainchild of Chris Gibson, frontman for the NJ band High Speed Chase. Orignally planned before the tragedy of September 11th, it was planned as a big birthday bash for Chris (whose birthday was October 5th...Happy Birthday Chris!), but after the tragedy Chris turned his party into a huge benefit show. I believe 18 artists played, including such notable NJ artists as Slushpuppy, Jim Testa, Shades Apart, and of course High Speed Chase. It was an amazing night of camaraderie amongst the bands and patrons. I was honored to be involved with this event and hope that we not only raised a lot of people's spirits (I know mine was raised), but that we also raised a lot of money to help (at presstime a final dollar amount had not been tabulated). I learned a lot helping out on this event, and it makes me even more determined to put together my often spoke off Anniversary/benefit show.
It is also important to mention that High Speed Chase wrote a song for the event titled, "you can't keep us down", which was performed along with the help of several members of Slushpuppy and Paul from the Bastards of Melody. It was quite inspiring, especially hearing the audience singing along. Sadly, I do not have a copy of the live version of the song, but there is an almost as good studio version which I happily add to my playlist this week.
So let me one last time thank everyone who made that show so special and fulfilling, and a special thanks to Chris Gibson. Without your planning the show would never have happened. You brought the communtiy together for a cause. May there be many more shows like it.
Speaking of which, there is a big 2 day benefit concert next weekend at the Broadway Central Cafe. Click HERE for more info.
