I hate to start out this column on a negative note (and something not music related), but this is my forum to speak, and once in a while I may just briefly make a statement about something that bothers me. I went to the movies today, and please, when you go to the movies, can you actually watch the movie instead of talking during the whole thing. I don't want to hear anything other then what is on the screen. If what you have to say is so important, take it outside the theater, or better yet, write your own screenplay and film it and I'll spend 8 bucks to hear what you have to say. Until then, keep quiet. Come to think of it, it would also be courteous to do so while a band is performing, although I realize the rules become a little different in a bar setting. Ok, I vented. moving on...
I finally got the pleasure of meeting Damian, the creative force behind Lump N' Loaf Records, over at the Plum St Pub. The more people I meet from the New Jersey scene, the more I realize that most are not trying to destroy each other (something that plagues many local music scenes), but that we all realize we are part of one scene, and that helping one another succeed, ultimately helps the whole scene.
Damian, who is also a member of the band Como Drive, is willing to bring his own sound and lighting equipment to the Plum St Pub, so that bands on his label can perform. Everyone in attendance at the show also received a goodie bag full of all sorts of candy that your Mommy told you should never except from strangers :) Good thing by the end of the night I was friends with many people involved with Lump N' Loaf Records.
And the music...the night began with a performance by the Dustmites. What can be said about a band that utilizes double bass, 2 guitarists (both of which can do amazing solos), and a sound that can be mellow and spacey one minute, loud and psychedelic the next? I'm not sure I can adequately describe them other then that. They are a band that must be witnessed for oneself to understand.
The other performance of the night came from the Number Theory. After seeing them I can finally answer the question on which they titled their EP, "Mommy what's a Number Theory?" A Number Theory is a band of talented musicians that play indie-rock with pop leanings. At times they jam, at times you find youself singing along, but one thing they never are is boring.
The only negative thing I can say about the whole night is, "Why isn't there ample parking by venues?" Ugh! Between New Brunswick and Hoboken...I almost shudder to go to venues in those cities because of the parking situation, but as long as the music is good I will deal with this inconvenience :)
