Message From Lazlo

Hi Everyone,

Here's to good friends...

So not only did I get an awesome Folk You! show to celebrate my birthday over the weekend, but several of my friends from the local music scene then shocked me by chipping in for a very generous gift, a pro turntable which a little birdie (i.e. my wife) must have told them I had been wanting to get. I've already thanked the indiviuals privately, but again I want to say thank you to all of you who were involved in making my birthday that much more special :)

And big thanks to the musicians who played at my birthday show:

Mazeffect
Michelle Vecchione
Scruff (Kohuff)
Jim Testa
John Raido
Chris Pierson
Jeff Devito (Particle Zoo)

Moving on to sadder news, shortly after sending out last week's newsletter I found out that on Friday May 5th, 2006, Chris Barry Passed away from complications related to COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) .

Chris Barry was far from a perfect person...but who among us is...I could talk about the bad things about him, but like most people when someone dies, I'm going to remember the good.

Chris Barry was a mainstay of the Jersey Shore music scene, both as a music journalist and promoter. He may have sometimes infuriated people with his writings, but make no mistake, Chris cared about music...and mroreso, the local music scene. When he booked shows at the Broadway Central Cafe in South Amboy, he'd give any band a chance, and even if they were lousy he'd usually find some encouraging words for them.

For me personally...I first met him back in the 90's when the Saint in Asbury Park first opened, and Chris hosted the spoken word night. He gave me my first opportunity to perform my spoken word in front of people, and he must have liked something in what I was doing, because he always invited me back to perform again.

Years later, shortly after starting BlowUpRadio.com, I ran into him again at the Broadway Central Cafe. When BlowUpRadio.com was still learning to crawl, he believed in it, and wrote a long article about it for his column in the Aquarian...sure some of the quotes from me were altered from what I said, but I never thought that was done with any malecious intent...

When BlowUpRadio.com wanted to do it's 1st anniversary show, Chris offered me the night of my choice at the Broadway Central Cafe...that's just the type of guy he was.

I could ramble on and on, but a picture says a thousand words, so I will leave with this picture of Chris doing what he does best...being part of the local music scene

There will be a memorial show for Chris Barry at the Wonderbar on May 24th

Peace,
Lazlo

Bobby Strange - 'halfway home'

Bobby Strange, one of the cornerstones of the Jersey Shore's original music scene, continues to build a national and international following with the release of his new EP "Halfway Home". Produced by John Noll of Retromedia Sound Studios, the EP features P.K. Lavengood of the John Eddie Band on Guitars and bass and past and present Asbury Jukes, Kevin Kavanaugh on keys and Joe Bellia on drums. The five songs on “Halfway Home” run the gamut of genres from the rocking “Without It Within”, to the sardonic “You Better Think”, to the spiritual “Days of Faith”, to the romantic “jane”and ending with the folky “Suki’s Smile”. The common thread tying the whole thing together is Bobby’s voice which adds just the right mix of soul and grit to his lyrics and melodies.

PARTICLE ZOO Keyboardist Will Play Final Show Before Hiatus

After five years playing keyboards, singing backing vocals, and taking the lead on his own compositions, Particle Zoo’s Jay Holler has announced that he will take an indefinite hiatus from the band to spend more time with his family and focus on other areas of his personal life.

Since joining the band in October 2000, Holler has made a lasting impression with both fans and critics, infusing Particle Zoo’s music with his signature arpeggiated Wurlitzer lines, distorted Fender Rhodes accompaniments, and infectious Moog melodies... (more)
