Supporting New Jersey's Local Music Scene Since 2000

Album of the Month
Citizens Band Radio - "CBR"

Earlier this year I gave a glowing review to a 3 song EP that I received from New Jersey's Citizens Band Radio. Those three songs begin their brand new full length CD, "CBR". On it, they continue to blend bluegrass, mountain music, classic country, and southern rock into something beautiful. Pedal steel guitar and mandolin mixes with twangy vocals, and songs with classic country type titles like, "ole Kentucky whiskey blues", "my ramblin ways", and, "band of outlaws". Fans of artists like Merle Haggard, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Jayhawks, Old Crow Medicine Show, Warren Haynes, and even the Grateful Dead, will all likely find something on this CD that they will enjoy. "18 wheels" even sounds like a country infused gospel song. Citizens Band Radio may not save your soul, but they can certainly move it with their fine debut album.

Message From Lazlo

Hi Everyone,

I'm still hard at work on the new BlowUpRadio.com Webcast. Still no set time frame as to when it will be up and running, but the good news is that it may be sooner rather than later. I managed to get a lot accomplished in the set up of the new webcast this week, and I'm much further along in the set up then I expected to be at this point. However, that simply means I will become behind schedule at some point this week.

~~~~~~~~~~
Tonight (Monday), I am starting a new Notes From The Den e-mail that I will send out semi-weekly to the Lazlo's Den e-mail list. In it I'll speak about some of the music I've been playing on the Den, any guests that will be stopping by, and rambling about shows I was at recently and other such nonsense that no one probably cares about (what is Lazlo babbling about?). If you're not already on the Lazlo's Den e-mail list (which is different from the BlowUpRadio.com e-mail list), and you'd like to be, send an e-mail to: lazlosden-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
~~~~~~~~~~

Speaking of Lazlo's Den, next Monday, Nov. 5th, I will be broadcasting a fascinating interview I recorded over the weekend with James Taylor, the publisher of Shocked And Amazed, the only journal dedicated to the sideshow attractions (fire eaters, sword swallowers, etc.), and burlesque shows. This hour long interview was so much fun to record, and I hope you all have as much fun listening to it.

Speaking of listening, don't forget to check out the latest BlowUpRadio.com Podcast. This week's podcast features music from: Jim Testa, The Successful Failures, Joe Harvard Band, Thomas Martin & The Martinis, Six To Eight Mathematics, Kate Hart, Dirt Road 14, Evergreen File, and Boxcar Nancy, as well as a spirited discussion on the subject of crazy and the NJ state constitution.

Don't forget to check out BlowUpRadio.com & LazlosDen.com for new CD reviews of albums by the Future Kings Of Nowhere, Critical Me, and West Indian Girl.

Peace,
Lazlo

Concert Picks of the Week

Lazlo (BlowUpRadio.com)

Crewman Number Six and Downshallow, two of New Jersey's best hard rock bands, will be playing together at McKeage's Tavern this Saturday. McKeage's may be a little out of the way, being in West Milford, but it's worth the trip tosee these two bands.
Jim Testa (Jersey Beat)

Thursday November 1st

BE YOUR OWN PET, The Jealous Girlfriends, Boy/Girl - Maxwells, 1039 Washington St. Hoboken - 9 pm, $12, 18+

Boy/Girl are a Jersey City-based guitar/drums duo, but rather than the White Stripes' bluesy rock or Two Gallants' mopey alt-country, the pair play dissonant, sexy, experimental noise rock. Kind of like what people who don't listen to Sonic Youth think what Sonic Youth sounds like.

The Jealous Girlfriends are an up -and-coming Brooklyn group whose bio describes their influences as everything "from Sonic Youth to Billie Holiday, Blur to Edith Piaf," and Be Your Own Pet is a teenaged noise-rock quartet from Nashville, discovered by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moon for his Ecstatic Peace label. Their age belies just how hard these kids can rock.
Concert Picks of the Week

Gary Wien (Upstage)

Picks for the week include Friday at Crosswoods in Garwood with Cool Days End, a rather under-rated band that's been doing some really good things lately including being the top vote getter for 105.7 The Hawk's "Wingstock 2007" contest. Then on Saturday, it's a one day jazz festival called Giants of Jazz 10 at the South Orange Middle School (71 N. Ridgewood Road). This year's show features Barry Harris as this year's Jazz Master Honoree.
Jared Migden (WRSU)

On Saturday night Particle Zoo and Secret Photos descend on the Iron Monkey in Jersey City. If you find yourself on the other side of the Holland Tunnel in NYC on Saturday, don't miss Bubble/Gum playing at Piano's.
