Hey Everyone,
We have two BlowUpRadio.com Free Concert Series shows coming up: Saturday April 28th – Ballroom, The Porchistas, Jonathan Andrew & Eric Blankenship Saturday May 5th – The Tea & Whiskey (last show!), Black Wine, The Timid Roosevelts, Sun Puddles Spread the word about both of these shows. Let’s pack Buddie’s Tavern and show them that they can make more money supporting local original music then they can by renting out the banquet room. In a time where there are fewer and fewer venues in NJ that supports local original music, let’s make sure Buddie’s Tavern knows that we want them to continue to be a safe haven for people who want to see good local bands! Buddie's Tavern is located at 277 Johnsons Lane, Parlin (Sayreville), NJ ~~~ Lazlo’s Corner Last week when I reviewed DEBRA DEVI’s informative book, “THE LANGUAGE OF THE BLUES”, I neglected to mention that every copy of the e-book also comes with the download of DEVI’s album, “GET FREE”. Purchase the e-book on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007FYBBTI This week marks the return of COUNTING CROWS, for their first independent release. And what did they choose to do with such freedom? They released an album of covers, “UNDERWATER SUNSHINE (OR WHAT WE DID ON OUR SUMMER VACATION)”. Unlike most cover albums, Counting Crows largely chose obscure songs, and many of them are by lesser known or very obscure acts. Personally, I think it’s awesome that instead of just covering the obvious, that they covered acts like The Romany Rye, Coby Brown, and Tender Mercies, all bands I was unfamiliar with before hearing their songs covered on this collection. I liked the covers so much that I sought out more info on these bands (and discovered to my surprise that Tender Mercies is a side project that 2 member of Counting Crows are in). There are also some choice covers of songs by Travis, Dawes, Sordid Humor (and band which Adam Duritz supplied backing vocals on their one album from the early 90’s), Pure Prairie League, Big Star, Teenage Fanclub (a band which I’ve always felt deserved more attention), The Faces, and Bob Dylan (a cover of “you ain’t going nowhere”, a song I’ve heard local musicians Jim Testa & John Raido cover on numerous occasions). Counting Crows manage to make all the songs their own, 15 songs in total, while at the same time keeping them recognizable to the originals. The album also includes extensive liner notes and stories about each song. While I would have preferred an album of new Counting Crows music, this is not your typical filling your contractual obligation, cover album. This is something far more inspired and well worth your hard earned money. Counting Crows play Roseland Ballroom in NYC on 4/24 www.countingcrows.com It’s hard to believe the DANDY WARHOLS have been a band for 18 years, but that’s what the press release for their new album tells me. I remember like it was yesterday the first time I heard, "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth", from their 1997 album, “...The Dandy Warhols Come Down”. I was instantly hooked. Their 8th album, “THIS MACHINE” (out on 4/24), may not contain any songs quite so hook laden as “bohemian like you”, or their aforementioned song, but what it does contain are 11 new songs, some of which have a harder edge to them then usual, all of which help to solidify why the Dandy Warhols are awesome! http://www.dandywarhols.com In what is beginning to feel like a column full of reviews of 90’s bands, let me add one more before moving on to other music. When CANDLEBOX arrived on the scene in the 90’s I was sucked in by songs like, “far behind” & “you”, but by the time the follow up to their debut came out I had moved on. They continued to put out albums in the 90’s, and the commercial station I worked for back then played them, so I got to hear their output long after everyone else had stopped playing them. So a few weeks ago when I was sent their new album, “LOVE STORIES AND OTHER MUSINGS”, I was ready to write it off as another album I was not going to like. It didn’t help that they tacked on new versions of their hits to the end of this new album (though it may be a savvy marketing ploy to get some people to buy the album). What surprised me most about this album was how much the band has changed. no longer are they trying to be angst riddled grunge-lite band (except on the tepid re-workings of their hits, the weakest part of this new collection). They have reinvented themselves to have a more commercial arena rock sound (imagine a more rocking matchbox twenty with bigger guitar riffs). This may not be an award winning album, but it was an enjoyable listen. www.candleboxrocks.com On the local NJ music front is “WPU SESSIONS”, from SONS OF PATERSON, a hip hop/rap band. Note the word “band”. Like The Roots, these guys aren’t using autotune and other electronic sounds and looped beats to make their music. No, they play instruments and don’t need rely on studio wizardry because the music they make works so well with the rhymes they lay over it. In particular, “Tabatha’s song” is just excellent all around track. You can download the “WPU Sessions” for free here: http://sonsofpaterson.bandcamp.com Do you like laid back instrumental reggae ska? Then do yourself a favor and check out 10FT. GANJA PLANT’s new album,. “DEAD SHOTS VOL.2”. The album made me feel like sitting on the beach watching surfers wipeout, so I did the next best thing and put on a surfing DVD and made their music the new soundtrack.
