Hey Everyone,

We are less than two weeks away from the first of two BlowUpRadio.com Free Concert Series shows coming up:

Saturday April 28th – Ballroom, The Porchistas, Jonathan Andrew & Eric Blankenship

Saturday May 5th – The Tea & Whiskey (last show!), Black Wine, The Timid Roosevelts, Sun Puddles

Spread the word about both of these shows. Let’s pack Buddie’s Tavern and show them that they can make more money supporting local original music then they can by renting out the banquet room.

In a time where there are fewer and fewer venues in NJ that supports local original music, let’s make sure Buddie’s Tavern knows that we want them to continue to be a safe haven for people who want to see good local bands!

Buddie's Tavern is located at 277 Johnsons Lane, Parlin (Sayreville), NJ

It’s a rare occasion for me to actually go out to a movie theater. With ticket (and soda) prices being so dang expensive, and audiences that talk, text, and otherwise distract, most movies simply not being worth it. But the long overdue, CABIN IN THE WOODS, (it was stuck in limbo because of MGM going bankrupt) was a film worth seeing in the theaters before some spoils it giving away too many of the plot twists and surprises. It didn’t hurt that Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, this Summer’s Avengers movie, etc.) co-wrote the film with director Drew Goddard. In Joss Whedon I trust, and I’m glad I did. The film clues you into the fact it is not an ordinary horror film in the very first scene. I’m not going to give that or anything else of substance away. I’ll say this, yes it has blood, and some gore. No, it’s not really scary. Yes, it is funny at times. No, it is not a parody like Scary Movie (thankfully). It is very exciting and riveting, and best of all it has some real substance to it and long after the film is over you are still talking about it because there is so much to talk about. Go see it now. Don’t wait for someone to spoil it for you.

THE BREAK EVENS have returned with a free digital download single! Woo-hoo! It has been three years since they released “win if you can…”, and their long awaited follow up comes in the form of two songs. The “A side” (can I call it that when it is a digital download? Well I am), “CRAZY EYES”, sung by Mark Parker, sounds like the type of garage rock song that could have been done years ago, and yet does not in anyway sound dated. It rocks! As does their “B side”, a cover of the instrumental song, “PIPELINE”, originally done by the Chantays (but covered many times over the years). Big riffs, big fun! Download both songs for free (in a zip file) here:

Last year I saw THE DIG open for Local H at The Brighton Bar, and was taken in by their layered indie rock sound that was extremely compelling. On May 29th their new album, “MIDNIGHT FLOWERS”, comes out, and it is even better than their last album, “electric toys”. Check them out for yourself by downloading the first single from the new album, “RED ROSE IN THE COLD WINTER GROUND” for free at their website:

Speaking of LOCAL H, one half of the band , front man/guitarist SCOTT LUCAS has a side project, SCOTT LUCAS & THE MARRIED MEN, that are about to release their debut album. This band is less garage/punk rock and more alt-country/roots rock. It’s great to hear this side of Scott Lucas, and you can hear it too. Download their first single, “HALF BLOOD MOONS”, here:

I love good garage rock, and so too does record label Modern Hymnal. Recently they released the new album from NJ’s The Brixton Riot, and now they about to release (on 5/8) the new album from Baltimore band, GARY B & THE NOTIONS. “HOW DO WE EXPLODE”, is aptly titled as the ten songs on it make me want to explode in fits of air guitar, pogoing & flopping to the grooves, and singing along at the top of my lungs. Pure fun. Speaking of pure fun, Gary B & The Notions play the Brighton Bar on Saturday 4/21 along with the afore mentioned the Brixton Riot, and Jon Caspi & The First Gun. That my friends is a triple threat of rock fun.

CUFF THE DUKE, who put out a great album this year called, “morning comes”, has now made a covers EP available for free. “IN OUR TIME”, features inspired takes on songs by SMOG, Guided By Voices, Dum Dum Girls, Billy Fay, John Lennon, and Sonic Youth. You should definitely check it out:

And I leave you this week with the latest video from SAID THE WHALE. “THE REASON”, comes from their wonderful album, “LITTLE MOUNTAINS”.
