Newsletter 8-28-12

Hey Everyone,

The dates are set!

This year’s BANDING TOGETHER – A BENEFIT WEBATHON FOR THE SPONDYLITIS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA will air on BlowUpRadio.com October 19th thru 21st.

Over 60 bands are already signed up to perform live during the webathon as we try to raise money to a cause near and dear to me (my wife suffers from ankylosing spondylitis).

If you are a musician and want to be involved, e-mail me. There is still time to be involved, and we would be happy to have you!

We are going to start mentioning some of the line-up soon right here in this newsletter.

THE BURNING OF ROME describes themselves as, “Blending gypsy punk, dance and rock into a mind-bending stew”, I call it fun, harmonious synth-based pop. The only negative thing I can say about their new album, “WITH US” (out 9/18), is that they put a 16 minute “untitled” track on the album, that is a tedious, experimental, instrumental piece. Don’t let that scare you off though, as the other 11 tracks are a blast! And “name dropping”, Paul Leary (Butthole Surfers) remixed several tracks on the album.

VAL EMMICH’s last album, “aide memoire” (backed by his band The Veeries), was my favorite album of last year. His follow up, “BULLDOZZZER”, is a much more bare album, many tracks being just Val and an acoustic guitar, and no epic sprawling 8 or 9 minute songs. The result is no less compelling than his last album, as the vocals shine on this album. It is a melancholy disc, possibly no more so than the crushing closing track, “audience”, detailing the question every artist has to ask at some point in their career, “There’s no one left in the audience. Everyone wants to be in the show. / So what am I doing here? I don’t know.” We’ve all had those days. The way Val sings this literally brought tears to my eyes. As long as Val keeps making brilliant albums like “bulldozzzer”, I will be in the audience, and you should be too. You can download this masterpiece for “pay what you want” over at Bandcamp. Show him he has an audience and don’t be cheap!

If you like prog rock you really must check out the new album, "VITTJAR" from Swedish band, KAIPA. Even though this band has been around since the 70's, I had never heard of them before this album. Now that I have heard their music, which falls somewhere in the mystical space between Rush and Yes, I really need to seek out their back catalog.

Sometimes the sign of a great album is the huge fucking grin on my face from the first note of the first song to the last note of the last song, and the all around awesome feeling I’m left with. BOB MOULD’s new album, “SILVER AGE” (out on 9/4), is everything I love about rock and roll! In my opinion this album is destined to be as classic as his early post Husker Du solo stuff, and Sugar’s debut, “copper blue” (which incidentally his current tour has him playing “copper blue” and “silver age” in their entirety...how fucking awesome is that!) People, if you love rock & roll, GO GET THIS ALBUM!

Bob Mould’s tour hits Williamsburg Park (Brooklyn) for a free show on September 7th, and a not free show at Union Transfer (Philly) on September 11th.

Titling your EP, "OLD CREEK REVIVAL", gives you a feel you are about to listen to some down home, roots rock, or a bluegrass/country sound. What it may not prepare you for is NIGHTS & WEEKENDS. This Canadian band takes a roots rock sound and infuses it with hip-hop rhymes, and pop hooks. The result is a somewhat familiar sound (think G Love meets Gangstagrass meets...I don't know, Matchbox Twenty maybe...), but twisted into their own unique blend. If their is any negative to this EP is that it is only 4 songs and I want to hear more.

Speaking of GANGSTAGRASS, they are back with a new album, "RAPPALACIA", once again seamlessly blending hip-hop with bluegrass/mountain music. On their last album, T.O.N.E-z did all the rapping. On this album, a host of people contribute rhymes (including T.O.N.E-z) to Gangstagrass's tunes. Collaborating with multiple artists works amazingly well, and let's the creative juices flow as easily as a skilled rapper's rhyme.
