Lazlo’s Corner

It is hard to believe that in a few short weeks will be the official date of BlowUpRadio.com being in existence for 12 years (December 15th).

On the one hand the time has gone very quickly, and I still remember the day I first put the station together, and then shortly thereafter learned enough HTML to design a crude looking site. My HTML skills have only gotten slightly better over the years, but my studio has expanded greatly with more equipment constantly being added to make the station sound as good as I can make it.

On the other hand, I think about how many great bands have come and gone. So many of the bands I played in the first year of BlowUpRadio.com are now defunct (though many of the members of those bands are in other bands that are still active).

I've watched rock radio stations come and go from the terrestrial radio dial, and music websites & internet stations spring up, become quite popular, but then burn out and die.

BlowUpRadio.com may never have been as big as some of these that have come and gone, but we've continued on and built a nice niche for ourselves. I think there are a few reasons why.

I have never tried to make money off of this site/station. Most stations and sites are a business and are out to make a profit. That is not the case with BlowUpRadio.com. This is a hobby for me. I spend money each month to keep my hobby going, but I cannot imagine ever not doing this. My passion is music, and trying to get the word out about bands that I think are great (many of them bands that do not get played elsewhere).

Because I am not trying to make money, I am free to play what I want, and not forced (as I was when I worked in commercial radio) to adhere to a tight format and playlist that told me exactly what songs to play in an exact order, when to talk, what to say, and when I could go to the bathroom. Ok, the last one may be an exaggeration, but it is no wonder so many DJs get burned out at their job. Being a DJ should be fun, but there is no fun in having no control over your show.

Also because I am not trying to make money, I do not pay attention to the number of hits my site gets. I don't care it. I would be doing this even if no one listened or read it. I know people do because I get e-mails from fans, and talk to people in public, and I love that because it means people are hearing the music I am trying to promote (and based on comments, people like the music I play). But even if I didn't get that, I would still do this because as I said before, I just can't imagine not doing it.

12 years ago I was doing part-time DJ work at a commercial station.

I was burned out, I was in my mid 20's and still trying to find myself.

I set up BlowUpRadio.com because I needed the outlet for myself. I am still amazed how much it has grown...and how much I have grown from having done this and met all of you.

I know, I'm rambling...I guess I just wanted to reminisce and say thanks for listening and reading so I am not just talking/typing to myself.

Long live BlowUpRadio.com!

Long live good music!
