Lazlo’s Corner

If you are like me you are already familiar with BRENDON SMALL as the man behind the Adult Swim cartoon Metalocalypse and the death metal band from it that he fronts, Dethklok. Now he has a side project that harkens back to the more melodious metal of the late 70’s and early 80’s (think Judas priest and Iron Maiden) , “BRENDON SMALL’S GALAKTIKON”. I may not be the metal head I once was, but this album kind of made me nostalgic for when I was. Brendon’s love of the genre shines through, and unlike some other modern bands that tackle a more “classic” metal sound, this does not come off as a parody. Kudos!

Back in the early days of BlowUpRadio.com I used to play a band called Slushpuppy a lot. They made catchy rock, and guitarist/lead singer Dawn Botti could belt out a song with rock attitude or bluesy soul, depending on the needs of the song. Dawn and her husband, drummer Gary Szczecina, called it a day with Slushpuppy in the mid 00’s, but in 2008 formed a new band, NEW DAY DAWN, and put out a good album in, “the company we keep”, but the album to me just didn’t quite feel like the pure rock album I wanted it to be. Their new EP, “RISE ABOVE THIS”, is that rock album! Proving that you can make a commercial sounding hard rock album that is not the watered down crap you usually hear on the radio, the 5 songs that make up this nearly 20 minute album are catchy as hell but have an edge to them. The obvious single to me is the lead off track, “you are my everything”, which is a little more pop than the rest of the album, but the loud guitar pop that used to dominate the radio. I found the chorus still rattling around in my head a day after listening to it, but unlike when an annoying song gets stuck in my head, New Day Dawn’s music can happily bounce around inside my head.

There are few bands better today at mining the classic Brit-power-pop sound than THE ANDERSON COUNCIL. The fact that they are from right here in NJ and not Britain is irrelevant. One listen to their latest album, “LOOKING AT THE STARS”, and you won’t need to ask why. Which is why you should quit reading this review and go listen to it now at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/theandersoncouncil. If you need more description, here it is: the guitar hooks, the backbeat, the harmoniously catchy vocals, all blend together to make this albums feel like a sunny, refreshing spring day, even though I am listening to this album on a cold, rainy day. Now quit reading and go listen for yourself!
