Lazlo's Corner

I read the other day that WPLJ went off the air, and was surprised to find I actually felt bad about it.

It had been many years since I listened to the top 40 station regularly, but growing up it was among the few stations I listened to that was popular in school.

When I was growing up there were 2 top 40 stations fighting for dominance in the NYC metro area, WPLJ & Z100. I could not listen to Z100 as it physically made me nauseous (a college professor later explained that the compression equipment Z100 used caused nausea and headaches in some people... lucky me).

I was a channel surfer and listened to a lot of different radio stations, some college stations, some rock/classic rock, occasionally an oldies station, and yes, when I wanted to hear top 40, WPLJ.

The DJ's generally seemed happy & upbeat there... something I found out later was an act, second hand when I did the same act working at a rock station that played a good deal of truly awful, forgettable rock, and first hand when I met some a couple of the DJ's who I grew up listening to. They were burned out and referred to their time at WPLJ as something to pay the bills. I get it, it's a job, but working in radio should be fun, and not like a normal job we do to make ends meet.

So when I wanted to fit in at school... I was always an outcast, and became happier when I finally gave up trying to fit in (if you're young and reading this, take note of that)... when I wanted to fit in I listened to what was popular on WPLJ (as well as the videos on MTV).

Not all of it was bad. I still love The Cars, Bryan Adams, The Cure, and so many other artists I heard on WPLJ, but there are plenty of artists best left in the 80's that I was a fan of at the time because of WPLJ, Debbie Gibson, and Poison, among them.

Side note: because I was channel surfer, at the same time I was fan of those artists I was also a fan of Black Flag, Husker Du, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, R.E.M., and many other much cooler artists.

Side, Side, note: Years later I laughed hysterically when my punk & pop worlds collided as the Circle Jerks (fronted by former Black Flag vocalist Keith Morris) covered The Soft Boys' "I Wanna Destroy You" with Debbie Gibson on backing vocals.

But I digress...

If I have a point here, besides how sad it is to lose something from one's youth, it is that I would never give up the diversity of music I had growing up by listening to a lot of different stations. I hear people all the time say "I don't like top 40 music" or "I don't like (insert genre of music here... most often I hear people say rap)", I want to debate with them. Sure, I dislike a lot of music in some genres, but I also dislike a lot of music in all genres.

When I say #SupportGoodMusic, it is not about supporting good rock music, or good rap music, or even good NJ music, it's about all music. Expose yourself to different genres. BlowUpRadio.com plays a lot of different genres, but I know no one is only listening to this station (some of you may not be listening at all), nor should you only listen to this station.

It is easy to lump all music together into a category and say you don't like it, but it is far more fulfilling to treat music like a buffet. Try a little of everything, and that which you like, go back for more.
