Lazlo's Corner

Saturday night I caught a show at Espresso Joe's.

I know you're thinking, Lazlo you spend a lot of time at Espresso Joe's, so before I tell you about this great show, let me quickly explain.

In recent years a combination of getting up early for my day job, getting older, and other adult responsibilities, has prevented me from driving all over New Jersey to go to shows that I'd get home from at 2-3am. I am just unable to do that with any regularity anymore.

But I live very close to Espresso Joe's, and their shows end by 10pm (and being a coffeehouse, I can get coffee to help keep me up until 10pm, as some nights that is a challenge for because of how early I get up in the mornng).

So I was saying...

Saturday night I caught a show at Espresso Joe's with some really great singer-songwriters. I had gone because I heard Ralph Capasso would be playing percussion wit at least one of the four performers. I have known Ralph almost as long as I have bee doing BlowUpRadio.com, and as I discovered Saturday night as we were catching up, it has likely been more tha 7 years since we last saw each other.

It was because I spent the evening, before & after the performances, catching up with Ralph, that I goofed and forgot to ask for music from the performers to play on BlowUpRadio.com (a mistake I plan to rectify with e-mails to each of them)

So let's talk about those performers:

Coming down from New York, Sid Whelan opened the evening with some bluesy acoustic rock. His fiery lead guitar work was matched by his lyrical prowess. One song that stood out was a song he introduced by saying he had played it on a station and the DJ said something to the effect of, "if I could write a song like that I might still be married". The lyrics were heartfelt and spoke to a truth that i'm sure most can relate to at some point in their life.

Terry Haman followed with his self described depressing songs (one of my favs was called, "Despair"). Many of his songs told stories, often important socio-political topics.

Batting third on the evening was Andrew Dunn, who opened with a song called, "Adeline", that sounded so familiar, I thought I might have played this song on BlowUpRadio.com (I checked when I got home, and I have not, but I hope to rectify that soon). Another standout song in his exemplary set was a new amusing song about a drive-thru funeral (which is apparently a real thing).

Closing out the night, backed by the afore mentioned Ralph Capasso on percussion, was Chrissy Roberts. This was the perfect way to close the evening, Chrisy's voice intertwined with her guitar playing and Ralph's percussion, was both energetic and completely relaxing. It was that energy that kept me engaged even as my body was saying, "hey, you've been up since 5am, you're tired." "No, I am not, I am having too much fun."

Which is kind of my feeling of the whole evening, a lovely time having fun with some amazingly talented musicians.
