Ok, first things first. I am an idiot. Ok, not really, but I do owe a big apology to Mike Grau of World Beyond Network. Last week I did a whole big message about the big benefit show at Broadway Central Cafe, and I totally forgot to mention all the work Mike did in getting that show together and on the night of the show. Sorry Mike.
Now that I got that off my chest and don't feel quite as bad as I did when I realized my error, I can talk about NJ rock. So did anyone catch the "Allegiance of Neighbors" benefit concert at the Count Basie theater in Red Bank last Thursday of Friday? Well the shows were sold out mere minutes after they went on sale, but cable station CN8 broadcast Friday night's show, and what a show it was. Where else will you see a line up of New Jersey's biggest names like Bruce Springsteen (who played with almost every band there that night, including a great rendition of "light of day" along with Joan Jett), Bon Jovi (adding a gospel chorus to their song "keep the faith"), the Smithereens and Highway 9 (who held their own amongst the bigger names of rock). It was a wonderful benefit for a wonderful cause (helping Monmouth County's victims of the 9/11/01 tragedy).
And then there was the Court Tavern, one of the last standing rock clubs in New Brunswick, who has been celebrating 20 years of live music there by getting some of the best local bands to reunite. Friday I, sadly, missed the reunion show of Nudeswirl, a great hard rock band from the early 90's that was so close to breaking through to the big time when they chose to go their seperate ways. I can only hope they will be doing more shows soon.
On Saturday, they hosted the reunion of veteran New Jersey band Tiny Lights. The band, which released their first album back in 1986, is probably best known for their song, "big straw hat", which garned the attention of MTV's 120 Minutes (oh where, oh where did that cool video program go?). It was good to see Tiny Lights back on the stage, putting on a show that proved they were still at the top of their game. The show also featured great performances from another band that has been around since the 80's and recently reunited, Spiral Jetty, and Dave Murphy & the Hamilton Electric.
Are best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to Venus Butterfly's drummer, Mike Fuentes, who was involved in a car crash last weekend that left him with three cracked ribs. You can E-mail him well wishes at mfuentes@optonline.net.
