I was talking to some local musicians the other day about ways to get the NJ
music scene stronger. Venues are closing (or worse, deciding they can make more money with a
cover band or karaoke), and the shows that are happening many times are lightly attended.
So how can we resolve this?
Well here are two of my thoughts and I share it with you because the people on this list are a
mixture of local musicians and local music fans.
How many local shows do you go to in a month (those of you in a band, do not include shows you
are playing at)? I think that we should each try to go to at least 2 shows a month, and don't
just go see the same bands over and over again (something admittedly even I am slightly guilty of
at times). Go out and see what's out there. The Concert Calendar below lists every local show I
am aware of (if your show isn't listed, send me your info!) If we all support local venues and
local shows, we can let the venues know they can sustain a business hosting original music
nights, it let's the bands know that someone is listening to the music, and eventually the media
will notice that a scene "buzz" is forming and will hopefully garner some press that can only
help the scene more.
Step two, if you are in a band and don't have a gig on a given weekend, maybe post on your site
or on an e-mail list a recommended local show to check out. It could be a friend's band, or just
a band you've heard good things about. Promoting other shows when you don't have a show of your
own helps fans of one band realize that there are other good bands within NJ to see. Some of
your fans may not be aware how much good original music is out in NJ. Expose them to it.
And if you're a fan, spread the word about a band you saw that your friends should see. Post
about it on message boards like BlowUpRadio.com's
I know I say this a lot, but I truly believe in this scene and the talented muscians that are
part of it. We can really work together to make it flourish as a whole.
On a totally unrelated topic, and I am sorry for having to post something personal here, but I
have to find a new home for my cat. Due to circumstances beyond my control I can no longer
keep my cat here at my apartment, but I would prefer someone that would take good car of the cat
as opposed to bringing it to an animal shelter. The cat has had her yearly shots (most recently
in October), has been spayed & declawed.
Here's a pic of cat
If you need more info and/or can give her a good home, please contact me ASAP at Lazlo@BlowUpRadio.com.
Peace,
Lazlo
