Hi Everyone, For the first time in a while I spent the week and weekend away from shows, spending the weekend relaxing, just enjoying married life and life in general...and it was nice. Last night I realized, this is why a lot of people probably don't go to shows, it's just not relaxing...many venues are dark, dank, smoke filled (a problem that will be rectified next month with the smoke-free law taking effect), and just down-right uncomfortable. There's no place to sit, it's too hot, or too cold, it's too crowded, or too empty...it's like Goldilocks, not finding the "just right". I've heard all those problems, and I even agree with some of them, but I'll never stop going to shows because of them, and I hope people who have stopped going because of those reasons will reconsider what they are giving up. You're giving up the opportunity to see and hear live music by original bands. You're missing the opportunity to hear something fresh and original, sounds that radio and CDs can never capture...partially because of the vibe that can only be witnessed in the live setting, in person, at that time. Because a concert is an experience, and when it's good, it can take a person from the most miserable mood to a smiling happy fan, without the aid of alcohol or drugs. When it's good, you forget that the bar is a dive, and you let yourself go into the flow of the show, the music, the experience. A few weeks ago I hosted a show that Echofission, Harvey Moon Project, and Lo Faber played at. The show was an hour drive for me on a cold Saturday night where my wife was sick and unable to go, and I wasn't feeling so great either. But I went...initially out of duty to hosting the show. But let me tell you, once I got there, and the bands started playing, I felt better then I had that entire week. The stress of my dayjob, gone. The stress of my money woes, gone. The stress of knowing my wife was home sick and I couldn't do anything to help her get better if I had been there, gone. All I felt that night was the sheer joy of the music and the performance, and I left there that night revitalized. Maybe not everyone feels that way after a concert, but I hope a few of you do, and I hope a few more of you will go out and witness some local live original rock, and see if you can feel what I do. Support local live original rock! Peace, Lazlo |
Brian Fitzpatrick - 'further down the line'
The youngest of four brothers, Brian Fitzpatrick was born in Holliston, MA and grew up in New Jersey, where he still resides. He embraced music at an early age and, influenced by such legendary artists as The Who, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Jackson Browne, was already playing guitar and writing his own introspective, character-driven songs by age 11. “Being Irish, there’s a long lineage of storytelling I associate with my grandfather and down the line,” Fitzpatrick has said. “So, the most interesting thing for me has always been songwriting and storytelling more than playing guitar or being a rock star.”...
