Newsletter 7-20-09

Hey Everyone,

Saturday is going to be an incredible night at Buddie's Tavern. Two amazing local acts, Jonathan Andrew, and The Tea & Whiskey, play on a bill with one of my favorite touring bands, The Winter Sounds! As an added bonus, from NYC, The Glorious Veins, will be closing out the night.

And as always, The BlowUpRadio.com Concert Series at Buddie's Tavern is FREE!

Buddie's Tavern is located at 277 Johnsons Lane, in Parlin (Sayreville), NJ.

To get you ready for the show, tune in to BlowUpRadio.com at 9pm ET Wednesday night for my full hour interview and in-studio performance with Jonathan Andrew, followed at 10pm ET by a rebroadcast of Jonathan Andrew's CD release party from a few weeks ago (originally broadcast on WRSU).

Gary Wien (Asbury Music)

Two picks for this week. On Friday, the Stone Pony in Asbury Park has a great bill featuring Donavon Frankenreiter, Gary Jules, Quincy Mumford, Roland Eckstein. And on Sunday, there's a really good Twisted Covers show featuring the songs of Prince at the Twisted Tree Cafe in Asbury Park (starts at 5pm). Can you believe it's been 25 years since "Purple Rain" was released?

Pissed Off!

This week isn't really a Pissed Off.

This may be the start of something new I'll be adding to the websites.

For years I've picked up little nuggets that may help bands. Some of learned from bands, some are my own ideas. I've always meant to compile these nuggets, but never have I had the time.

Then a few weeks ago Trent Reznor posted this blog:
http://forum.nin.com/bb/read.php?30,767183,767183#msg-767183

In there are a lot of ideas I've been meaning to compile for a while.

However, I still have lots of other things that may (or may not) help bands.

So I am thinking about compiling a page on both websites that will include links to things like Trent Reznor's blog, as well as my own nuggets of information.

BUT, I don't want this just to be my thoughts, I want this to be collaborative.

There are plenty of musicians who read this newsletter, and check out BlowUpRadio.com & LazlosDen.com. I want musicians to be able to post things that have helped them that others may find helpful.

Now I don't want this to become a place where people promote specific businesses (such as, "Blank" Studio is the best and most affordable place to get your CD done), or for people to gripe, but if you have something useful, I want you to feel free to send it on to be place on the page.

Additionally, if you have a legit reason to think something on the page is wrong, or bad advice, I'd be happy to post your dissenting reason why.

Some examples of things I might post on the page:

- While MySpace, Twitter, etc., are all good ways to communicate with your fans, an e-mail list is still the absolute best way to let people know about gigs, albums, and anything else your band may be up to.

I use MySpace and Twitter, but often don't have time to read through all the messages, tweets, posts, etc. But, if I get an e-mail, I always read it, because it was sent directly to me. There are plenty of shows I would have gone to if only I knew about them.

- Speaking of e-mail lists, when you are playing a gig, always have a way for people to sign up for your e-mail list at a show.

- And if you have a CD, always bring copies to sell, no matter how small the gig might be.

Numerous times I've seen people come up to a band after a gig and say how much they enjoyed the set and they ask about a CD or to sign the e-mail list. If you don't have them, you just lost a sale, and possibly making a long-term fan.

Be prepared.

There's just a brief example of things to come.

So, do people think this would be useful? Good idea? Bad idea? Let me know.

That's all for this week folks.

Peace,
Lazlo
