Lazlo’s Corner

I have to start off this week talking about my favorite new band find of last year. British band, SKINNY LISTER was a great find when I caught them twice during the Warped Tour when it hit New Jersey last summer. Their working man’s folk-punk, and amazing live show, reminded me a lot of a band I discovered on the Warped Tour back in the 90’s, Flogging Molly. It is no surprise to me that the bands are now label mates (on SideOneDummy), and currently touring the US together. What is a happy surprise, is how well their debut album, “FORGE & FLAGON” (finally released in the US last week), captures their live sound. A song like, “John Kanaka”, is a show stopping a capella number live, and it somehow retains that on the studio version. Five of the twelve songs on the album also appeared on the EP they were selling at the Warped Tour, which you may recall was my second favorite album of last year. This album is absolutely amazing from beginning to end, but if you are looking for the one single to really hook you in, look no further than “rollin’ over” (watch the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=BCgv6ruGCB4).
It is only February, but this album is already a strong contender for album of the year.

Was really excited last week to get my hands on the new BAD RELIGION album, “TRUE NORTH”. I’ve been enjoying these guys music for more than 20 years now, and their last album, “the dissent of man”, was a brilliant album that showcased some differences from their standard sound. That’s why “true north” on first listen was a little disappointing. It is a perfectly solid album, but does not advance above an average Bad Religion album. Mind you, an average Bad Religion album, chock full of loud, fast, harmony laden, punk rock songs, beats many punk band’s best album, but it just isn’t as creative as their last album. Once I got over that and listened to the album a second and third time, I found myself really enjoying it for what it is, Bad Religion being Bad Religion.

Speaking of loud, fast, harmony laden, punk rock songs, while not particularly sounding like Bad Religion, the same description fits SIX TO EIGHT MATHEMATICS new CD, “MENTAL MELODIES”. With seven songs flashing by in a mere seventeen minutes, there is barely any time to stop and think about the aural assault coming at you. I kinda just got caught up in the moment and let loose. When the CD ended I found all sorts of stuff strewn about the room. Ah the power of rock & roll…
