Lazlo’s Corner
It is local music awards season...and of course with awards comes the inevitable backlash to said awards.
To me awards are bullshit, much like my top albums of the year (a list I am already working on). Both have extreme bias.
The awards are biased towards acts that are most popular, and/or, those deciding (judging) the awards personal preferences. Same goes for my top albums of the year list, which is my personal choices.
You are free to agree or disagree with who won, or my personal favorite albums.
So why do I do a top albums of the year list if it is bullshit?
Because people read the list and go out and check out music I think is good.
Which is the same reason why, even though I choose not to participate in award shows, I am also not going around complaining about who won and who lost. If people check out a band because they were nominated or won, then the awards are success.
Anything that helps promote good music is a good thing.
We may disagree on the definition of “good music”, but that is ok. It shouldn’t be a cause for complaining, instead turn what you feel is a negative into a positive.
So you don’t like (insert band name) that won an award, but you do like (insert another band name) that lost. Say “hey, (second band name) may have lost, but you should check them out they are really good”, instead of, “what bullshit that (first band name) won an an award. They suck!”
We don’t have all like the same music, but it doesn’t help the scene when we attack one another.
