Lazlo’s Corner

Summer is here and it is prime festival season!

Actually, I’ve already missed a few good festivals thanks to bad allergies in combination with a particularly bad pollen season.

But I love a good festival.

It is a great chance to see a lot of bands, and when they have multiple stages going at the same time, if I am not enjoying what I hear on one stage off I go to another.

Festivals have given me the opportunity to see lot of bands I wouldn’t otherwise see, or wasn’t aware existed. And within the local scene, it often gives me the opportunity to see a lot of bands I love together, some of which I don’t get to see often enough.

But when I really think of a great festival, I often think of the Wave Gathering. There were three years where for one weekend most of Asbury Park became stages and many of the great local bands I knew at the time played it, as well as some touring bands.

What was particularly great was running into the same musicians over and over again all weekend as they didn’t just play there set and leave, they hung around all day/night and all weekend. There was a real camaraderie, and for one weekend a year we were all one big family. It was a lot of fun.

now I know the Wave Gathering was a financial failure and that is why the fest is no more, but it was a success in so many other ways. Friendships and memories were made, great music was heard, much fun was had.

I would love to revive the Wave Gathering or something like it...
