Lazlo’s Corner

So Casey Kasem has passed away.

This leaves me with mixed feelings.

Casey Kasem was a part of my childhood. I remember listening in to his top 40 countdown every weekend, hearing the popular tunes of the week, some I loved, some I hated, but I always felt like Casey new what he was talking about and cared about the music he played, even if the famed, “long distance dedications“ were too saccharine for me, and took time away from the music I wanted to hear.

Turns out he was a better voice actor than a DJ…or I was just too young to hear the truth underneath his voice.

"I've never loved listening to music," Kasem admitted in a Mother Jones profile in 1989.

The shock when I learned that…to think that someone who did more to spread pop music to people at the time, quite possibly the most well known radio personality of the time, didn’t like the music he was playing.

I was crushed.

Later in life, having worked with radio DJs and met other radio DJs, I’ve seen many that are less than passionate about what they do. Some may have started out passionate about music, but were burned out by the strictly formatted, “play what we say”, direction that commercial radio went in the 80s, which threatened to kill my love for music when I worked for such a station in the 90s.

But Casey apparently never really cared about the music, and it was just another job for him. Just a paycheck, like doing voiceover on a commercial.

Whereas I lost respect for Casey Kasem as a DJ, as I got older I gained respect for him as a humanitarian. He was a strong advocate for animal rights, vegetarianism, anti-smoking, homelessness, world peace (especially in the Middle East), and discrimination against Arab-Americans.

So I choose now to remember Casey Kasem not for American Top 40, but for his humanitarian efforts.

I will end this column with a saccharine “long distance dedication”…rest in peace Mr. Kasem.
