Lazlo's Corner

I had every intention of announcing the full track listing for Rock Against Hate Volume 2 in this column today, but then this happened this week and changed everything for me.

https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/app/obituary.aspx?pid=188726634

If you've been around the local music scene for many years you likely knew, or knew of, Al Muzer. For years before I met him, I had read his local music column in the Aquarian. For me, and many others, he was a trusted source on New Jersey's music scene.

When I first started BlowUpRadio in December of 2000, I e-mailed Al to see if would write something up about it. The response I got back, I remember to this day, being enthusiastic and saying it was overdue, and surprising no one else had thought to do an internet station based around the local music scene.

In fact, he was so quick to write a story about BlowUpRadio in his column, we had not even built BlowUpRadio.com yet, and the story contained a long link to our Live365 stream.

I started to run into Al at a lot of shows. I wouldn't say we were close, but we would always exchange pleasantries, and would talk about the scene.

One fond memory... Somewhere there are photos, and I think may be video, of Al and I, along with several others, singing backing vocals for Joe Canzano, on a parody of the Rolling Stones "Sympathy For The Devil", during a Dogs Of War Cancer benefit. I don't think either of us thought of ourselves as singers, but there were were leaning into a mic and singing "Woo, Woo" over and over again and having a blast doing it.

As the obituary link above states, Al retired from music journalism in 2010, and I think I may have only seen him once or twice after that, as he still went to some shows (often the afore mentioned Dogs Of War Cancer benefit).

New Jersey can always use more people like Al. Someone who was passionate about the local music scene, and said so much in his weekly column. I wish I could write as eloquently as he did.

R.I.P.

As a post script, I just found this amusing video of Al, showing his sillier side. Not sure there was anyone else quite like him.
