Lazlo's Corner

The weird thing about not going to the movies (see previous posts about being a full time caregiver and not getting out these days... but also the movie going experience has deteriorated while prices continue to increase), is that by the time I see a film when it hits streaming, most everyone has seen it and moved on.

Also, avoiding spoilers until the movie hits streaming.

All this is a preamble to saying I finally got to see Sinners now that it is on Max (or the station formerly know as, and soon to be rebranded as, HBO Max).

Anyway, I see what everyone was raving about a few months ago. It is a good film

But...

As much as I love a good vampire film, I do wonder if it needed the supernatural angle. A film about a Juke Joint in the south in the 1930's, and all the characters' stories, would have worked just fine to me without the vampires (though there are some good allegorical points that required the vampires).

So I wanted to point out for anyone who liked the film and wanted to know more about Juke Joints, there is a wonderful 2003 documentary from Robert Mugge called, "Last Of The Mississippi Jukes". While I saw it on a cable channel years ago, it is now free on You Tube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fW87CgaEO1E

Another film you might want to check out is John Sayles' 2007 film Honeydripper, starring Danny Glover, Charles S. Dutton, and a not yet household name Gary Clark Jr. It appears even if you don't have Sling TV, that you can watch it here: https://watch.sling.com/1/program/c8fd1265f250da20a6d9c0e92cdc5f46/watch?trackingid=google-feed

Can you tell I am fascinated by the Blues and Juke Joints.
