Note: I posted the first two paragraphs below on Mastodon earlier this week.
I was just old enough to be listening to the radio on my own, but nowhere near old enough to get to a record store on my own, when "Crazy Train" ruled the airwaves. On a trip to the mall I begged my mom to get me "Blizzard Of Ozz" cassette. She took one look at the cover and said no.
It would be several years before I would own that album, along with many others from him solo and Black Sabbath.
Funny enough a few years later I remember my mom saying she was glad I didn't listen to hard rock/heavy metal, which at the time was being unfairly blamed for all manner of bad things (which would happen to rap in the 90's). At the time my favorite band was Def Leppard, whose cassette, "Pyromania", I had gone through several copies of from playing it too much (for those too young to remember, cassettes would warp or snap over time).
But I think my mom was oblivious because while I listened to a lot of hard rock/heavy metal, I also listened to a lot of pop of the era, along with oldies, so Billy Joel, Elton John, Beach boys, and The Beatles, among many others, were what I think my mom chose to see me as listening to.
I've always liked lots of different types of music. While my classmates listened to Z100 and WPLJ (the 2 pop stations), and were loyal to one over the other, I liked to go up and down the radio dial on the boombox that was on my side of the bed that was against the wall. I listened to WPLJ (years later I would discover that the reason I felt crappy listening to Z100 and stopped is because they over-processed their music which caused headaches in some listeners), but I also listened to WNEW (rock), WHTG (modern rock), several college stations, and WBGO (jazz). among others.
It was probably a combination of WPLJ and WBGO that introduced me to Chuck Mangione's music. His late 70's hit, "Feels So Good" was everywhere, but I recall hearing more than just that song, and I presume that was largely because of WBGO. It is kind of hard to think of pop radio these days playing a three and a half minute instrumental (let alone the full album version which is nearly 10 minutes long), but pop radio seemed more experimental then.
"Feels So Good" playing along side Billy Joel, Ozzy Osbourne, and Sugarhill Gang's, "Rappers Delight", seems like something only a college or internet radio station DJ would do today, but that wasn't unusual back when I was a kid.
I miss those days, and try to bring that same eclecticism to BlowUpRadio.com.
RIP Ozzy & Chuck. If there is an afterlife I'd love to hear what music you guys are making together.
I wrote the above Sunday morning, then Sunday afternoon I heard that we've lost Tom Lehrer also.
They like to say these things come in threes...
Tom Leherer put all his music in the public domain, so check it out here: https://tomlehrersongs.com/albums
