Lazlo's Corner

I am from Generation X

Not Billy Idol's 1970's band (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6XRwt99O4E)

Or the one time pairing of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and Guns N Roses (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOLkH8L4hw0) [note: the introduction to their set is cut off but to my recollection they were introduced as for one night only, Generation X]

No, I am from that generation of alienated youths... and unlike the youth of today we don't much talk about mental health.

I think it is wonderful that mental health is more openly talked about now, and wish it had been when I was younger when my troubles seemed so much more overwhelming.

That is likely because over the years I have developed tools to get through life's problems.

So I thought I would share this in case someone needed to hear this.

This week I got some terrible news about friends of mine (I'm not going to get into specifics, but the problem does not put them in danger of dying soon or anything, but is serious nonetheless).

For about 36 hours I was in a bit of a state of shock. While I got things done, I felt like I was in a zombie-like state... getting very little sleep was probably part of it.

Then, of all things, I was watching the latest episode of Hacks. No spoilers for those who haven't seen it, but some things happen in the episode that hit me emotionally and I started crying.

I'm not afraid to admit I cry over certain songs, as well as certain movies and shows, but this was not just a few tears and welling up, this was 20 minutes of uncontrollable crying. Fill a glass with tears, crying.

And you know what?

After it I felt so much better.

Science has proven crying releases stress and emotional pain (https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/is-crying-good-for-you-2021030122020)

But many of us grew up told not to cry.

So this a reminder to me and whomever else needs to hear it.

Find a song, a film, a show, a book...

Whatever moves your emotions...

And have a good cry.

It can be very cathartic.
